1. Who is responsible for your data

Vobo operates Vobo and is responsible for the personal information described in this policy. We are based in the United States, and this policy is written primarily for a US audience. The site is available worldwide, so it also sets out the rights of readers in the UK and the EEA under the GDPR. If you access the site from outside the United States, be aware that your information is processed in the United States. You can reach us at:

Vobo is an independent publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to WhatsApp LLC or Meta Platforms, Inc., and nothing on this site gives us access to your WhatsApp account, your messages or any data held by those companies.

2. Information we collect

a. Information you give us

Vobo has no accounts, no logins, no newsletter and no comment system. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to fill in. The only personal data you can give us is what you choose to put in an email to contact@vobo.online — typically your email address, your name if you sign it, and whatever you write. We use that solely to answer you.

b. Information collected automatically

Like every web server, our host receives the technical information a browser must send in order to be sent a page back: your IP address, the page requested, the referring page if any, your browser and operating system as reported in the user-agent string, and the date and time. These server logs are used to deliver pages, to keep the site available and secure, and to diagnose faults. They are not used to build a profile of you and are not combined with anything else.

c. Cookies and similar technologies

We and the third-party providers described in sections 4 to 6 use cookies and similar technologies — pixels, web beacons and local storage — to measure traffic, understand how the site is used, and serve advertising. Section 3 explains your controls, and our Cookie Policy lists the individual cookies.

We do not knowingly collect national identification numbers, financial account numbers, precise geolocation, health information, or any other category of sensitive or special-category personal data, and we never ask you to provide any of it.

3. How we use information

We use the information described above to:

• operate, maintain and secure the site, and deliver the pages you ask for;
• detect and prevent scraping, abuse, fraud and attacks, using server logs;
• respond to emails you send us, and to copyright and privacy requests;
• measure and improve the site, and display and measure advertising, where those services are enabled;
• comply with our legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

For readers in the UK and the EEA, where the GDPR requires a lawful basis: delivering and securing the site and answering your correspondence rest on our legitimate interests; advertising and analytics rest on your consent, collected before anything non-essential loads and withdrawable at any time from section 12; and legal compliance rests on our legal obligations.

4. Advertising — Google AdSense

Vobo shows advertising through Google AdSense, which is what pays for the hosting and the writing. In connection with that:

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites.
• Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
• Third-party vendors and ad networks may place and read cookies in your browser, or use web beacons or your IP address, to collect information as a result of ad serving on this site.
• Some ads may be personalised based on inferred interests; others are non-personalised and are chosen from the content of the page or your general location.

Consent for advertising and analytics on this site is collected by Google’s own certified consent management platform, configured in our AdSense account rather than built by us. Google requires a TCF-certified CMP for personalised advertising served to the UK, the EEA and Switzerland, and the same platform serves the notices required by California and other US state privacy laws. Google Consent Mode v2 is set to denied before any tag loads, so advertising and analytics storage stays restricted until you choose.

Your advertising choices

• Opt out of personalised advertising from Google at myadcenter.google.com.
• Read how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
• Opt out of personalised advertising from many participating vendors through the Digital Advertising Alliance at optout.aboutads.info, or in Europe through youronlinechoices.eu.
• Decline non-essential cookies in Google’s consent message when it appears, or reopen it at any time from section 12.

5. Analytics — Google Analytics 4

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how readers find and use the site so we can improve it. GA4 uses cookies and similar identifiers to record information such as pages viewed, time on page, traffic source, approximate city-level location derived from IP, and device and browser type. In GA4, IP addresses are anonymised and are not logged or stored by default, and Google processes this data as our service provider.

You can read how Google uses this data at policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics on every website by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, or decline analytics cookies in Google’s consent message.

6. Session analytics — Microsoft Clarity

No session-replay or heatmap tool runs on Vobo. We do not use Microsoft Clarity or any comparable product, so nothing here records your mouse movement, your scrolling or your clicks.

7. How we share information

We do not sell your personal data for money, and we have never done so. We share limited data with the providers that make the site work, each under its own privacy policy: our hosting provider and content delivery network, which necessarily process your IP address in order to serve pages; our email provider, for correspondence you send us; and the advertising and analytics providers named in sections 4 to 6 where those are enabled. Please note that using advertising and analytics cookies may count as “sharing” personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising under some US state laws — see section 10.

We may also disclose information where we are legally required to, to enforce our Terms of Service, or to protect the rights, safety and security of Vobo, our readers or the public. If the site were ever transferred to a new operator, this policy would be updated before any data moved with it.

8. International transfers

Vobo is operated from the United States and information collected through it is processed there. If you access the site from the UK, the EEA or elsewhere, your information is transferred to the United States, which may not provide the same level of legal protection as your own country. Where personal data is transferred out of the UK or the EEA, it is protected by an adequacy decision, by Standard Contractual Clauses, or by another safeguard permitted under Article 46 of the UK and EU GDPR. Google and Microsoft both publish the transfer mechanisms they rely on in their own privacy documentation.

9. Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as we need it. Server logs are retained by our hosting provider for a short operational period, typically measured in weeks, and then deleted. Email correspondence is kept for as long as it takes to resolve your enquiry and a reasonable period afterwards in case you follow up. Analytics and advertising data, where enabled, is retained according to Google’s and Microsoft’s own configurable retention settings — for GA4 we use the shortest retention period the product offers.

10. Your privacy rights

California (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA gives you the right to:

• know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect, the sources, the purposes, and the categories of third parties we disclose it to;
• delete personal information we collected from you, subject to exceptions;
• correct inaccurate personal information;
• opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising;
• limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information — we do not use or disclose any in a way that triggers this right; and
• not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

We do not sell personal information for money, and we never have. Our use of advertising and analytics cookies may qualify as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising, and you can opt out through Google’s consent message and the opt-outs in section 4. To opt out, decline non-essential cookies in Google’s consent message and use the advertising opt-outs in section 4. We honour Global Privacy Control signals: when we detect a GPC signal from your browser we treat it as an opt-out request for that browser. For any other request, email us; we may need to verify your identity first, and you may use an authorised agent where the law permits.

Other US states

Comprehensive privacy laws in states including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon and Montana give residents broadly similar rights — to access, correct, delete and obtain a copy of personal data, and to opt out of targeted advertising and of profiling with legal effects. We extend the rights described above to residents of every US state rather than checking which statute applies to you, and we honour GPC everywhere. Some of these laws provide a right to appeal a refused request; if we refuse yours, our reply will explain how to appeal.

UK and EEA (GDPR)

If you are in the UK or the EEA you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you; to have it corrected or erased; to restrict or object to our processing of it; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time where consent is the basis, without affecting processing that already happened. Email us to exercise any of them and we will respond within one month.

In practice we usually hold nothing identifiable about you beyond an IP address in a short-lived server log, so an access request is often answered by telling you exactly that. You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk; in the EEA, your national data protection authority.

Everyone else

Wherever you live, you can adjust your browser and device cookie settings, use the advertising and analytics opt-outs in sections 4 and 5, and contact us to ask what we hold. We respond consistently with applicable law rather than only where a statute compels it.

11. Children’s privacy

Vobo is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. Consistent with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we would delete any such information on becoming aware of it. If you are under 13, please do not use the site or send us any personal information. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, email contact@vobo.online and we will remove it.

13. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and access to the systems that publish it is restricted and protected by strong authentication. Vobo is a static publication: there is no database of readers, no login system and no stored payment details, which removes most of what would otherwise be at risk. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

There is still no agreed industry standard for responding to Do Not Track browser signals, so like most publishers we do not act on them. We do honour Global Privacy Control, which has legal effect in California and several other US states, and we treat it as an opt-out of sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising for the browser that sends it.

15. Links to other sites

Our articles cite primary sources, most often WhatsApp’s own help pages, and those links go to sites we do not control. This policy does not apply to them. External links carry rel="nofollow noopener", and clicking one does not pass any information about you from us — but the site you arrive at has its own privacy practices, which are worth reading.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes — most obviously if advertising or analytics is introduced. When we make a material change we will revise the “last updated” date at the top of this page, and where the change requires your consent we will ask for it before the change takes effect rather than afterwards. Continuing to use the site after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
