## The realistic route: get the number back briefly

You do not need the number permanently. You need it for about five minutes, once. That is a much easier thing to arrange than people assume, and it is worth exhausting before concluding anything is lost.

### Getting five minutes of access to the old number

1. **Find the old SIM** — Drawers, old phone cases, the original SIM card holder. A SIM that has not been used for months often still receives an SMS if the account was not formally closed.
