This is the same format you need when saving anyone else's international number, and getting it wrong is the usual reason a foreign contact never appears in the app — see [using WhatsApp internationally](/whatsapp-internationally). ## When the number is not what you expected If the number shown in Settings is not the one you thought you were using, the account is registered to a different number. That happens more often than it sounds, usually in one of these ways. 1. The phone has two SIMs and the account was registered on the other one. 2. You restored a backup from an old phone that used an older number. 3. The account was set up by somebody else — a shop assistant, a family member — using whichever SIM was in the phone at the time. 4. You changed your carrier number without migrating WhatsApp, so the account is still on the old one. This one has a deadline: if the old number is recycled to someone else, they can take the account. The fix in all four cases is the same and should not be delayed: use the Change Number tool while you still control the old number, which migrates your chats, groups and settings across. If you type a different number into your phone's contact card for yourself, WhatsApp will not care — it reads the account, not the contact. ## Sharing your number with someone Three ways, in increasing order of convenience. - Read it out. Fine for one person; error-prone for a group. - Share your contact card. In any chat, tap the attachment icon and choose Contact, then yourself. - Show your QR code.
